IOC: No Pyeongchang invite for CAS-cleared Russians

Russians allowed to participate at the Olympics are required to compete under the name of "Olympic Athletes from Russia" (OAR) following the IOC's ruling to disqualify Russia as a country from the Games.

However, The IOC maintained that clean athletes have the right to participate in the Pyeongchang Winter Games as the "Olympic Athletes of Russian Federation". The lawsuit contains a motion to hold a hearing in the Lausanne-based court on February 7, 2018.

They include those who had their life bans lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) last week.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned Russian Federation from Pyeongchang over "systematic manipulation" of the anti-doping system in Sochi four years ago but left the door open for athletes with no history of doping to compete as neutrals.

The IOC hasn't said why any of the individual Russians weren't invited, but has said it used a newly available database detailing past doping when it decided who should be eligible.

While the organizers of the Games - the International Olympic Committee - would prefer to be talking about the excitement of Winter Olympic sports and the star athletes of PyeongChang 2018, instead it's embroiled in courtroom battles. In the next few days, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) - sport's top arbitration body - will hear an appeal by a group of Russian athletes who are challenging the decision to exclude them from the Winter Olympics, nearly a month after they were excluded from the competition.

A special International Olympic Committee panel "agreed the decision of the Cas had not lifted the suspicion of doping".

Among them are multiple Olympic champion speed skater Viktor Ahn and biathlon gold medallist Anton Shipulin. One of them being the invitation of around 169 athletes with no doping history to compete as neutrals.

"We talk more than we walk".

After the CAS decision, Russia's Olympic Committee requested that 13 active athletes and two who had become coaches be allowed to participate in the February 9-25 Games.

However, on Monday, the IOC Invitation Review Panel recommended that the committee not extend an invitation to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang to 15 Russian athletes and coaches, who were among those 28 acquitted.

On Thursday, the aforementioned athletes filed appeals at the CAS Ad Hoc Division, which began working in South Korea.

Bach is sure be grilled by the full International Olympic Committee membership about the decision to exclude many Russian athletes for the Games despite a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that overturned doping bans for many of them.

"The IOC also suspended the ROC based on the reports of alleged doping violations released by the Oswald Commission IOC commission, headed by former Switzerland President Samuel Schmid, banning the national team from participating in the 2018 Olympic Games".
