Manchester United striker Alexis Sanchez has been condemned to 16 months in jail for conferring charge misrepresentation amid his chance as a Barcelona player.

According to reports including the Metro, Sanchez admitted to dodging a total of €983,443 (£874,810) during his time at Camp Nou, evading the Spanish tax authority by concealing what he earned through image rights whilst in Catalonia.

He was also handed the jail sentence but will not have to spend any time in prison unless he commits a similar offence within the next two years.

This is not the first time a high-profile footballer has been prosecuted by the Spanish courts for tax evasion.

Sanchez moved to Barcelona from Italian side Udinese in 2011 and joined Arsenal three years later.

German coalition deal sets no timetable to end glyphosate use
However, the SPD's parliamentary leader Andrea Nahles told her party that they would "negotiate until the other side squeals" . Her first attempt to form a coalition with smaller parties failed when talks collapsed in November .

Sanchez posted on social media a statement from Felicevich which criticised Spain's authorities for changing their criteria on tax returns and using the media to publicly shame players.

The agency's article says the Chile forward will pay back that figure plus interest, along with a fine of 590,065 euros (£523,029) and will not receive public aid or tax incentives in Spain for two years.

Barcelona star Messi was handed a 21-month jail term in 2016, but managed to exchange it for a €250,000 fine previous year, while Mourinho paid to settle his and Carvalho was given a fine and a seven-month sentence.

The Red Devils are now 13 points behind leaders City after 26 matches and return to action on Sunday when they visit Newcastle United.
