Alphabet rolls its Nest good house unit again into Google

Nest rejoins Google to help Assistant take on Alexa

Nest Labs, known for its smart home Wi-Fi thermostat, was acquired by Google in 2014 for $3.2 billion and later became an independent Alphabet "other bets" unit dedicated to connected devices.

Today's announcement comes just a few months after the Wall Street Journal reported a possible integration of the entire Nest team into Google to assist with its smart-home ambitions.

Hardware chief Rick Osterloh announced the news today in a blog post, a move that had previously been rumored late past year following a report from The Wall Street Journal. Likewise, Google Home had a stellar Holiday 2017 with regards to sales as it attempts to gain ground in the smart AI speaker market. Fadell resigned as head of Nest in 2016, but the company kept going under Google's new Alphabet corporate structure. It doesn't really make sense to have two separate organizations developing hardware that is meant to work together seamlessly; it's far more efficient to unify the teams for deeper collaboration and more fruitful development. The company also launched its Nest Secure alarm system, a doorbell called Nest Hello (that comes with a free Google Home mini), and a smoke and carbon monoxide detector called Nest Protect.

Winter storm and snow fall warning issued
Some airlines preemptively canceled or delayed flights on Tuesday in preparation the conditions Winter Storm Liam would bring. So here's the scenario: Snow will start falling well after midnight tonight as temperatures hover around 20 degrees.

Therefore, the goal is to leverage the strengths of both teams to better develop smart home products.

"To build on this momentum, we're excited to bring the Nest and Google Hardware teams together". Google itself has also been busy hardware-wise, but now they have chose to bring back Nest into the Google fold, combining it with the hardware team to be able to bring even more smart products to the home.

Previously, Nest operated under Alphabet's "Other Bets" group of projects. This partnership will bring Google Assistant to their future hardware along with Google Cloud AI services. That move isn't surprising now that Amazon, Google and now Apple all offer standalone voice-enabled wireless speakers.
