Thirty-Two Russian Athletes Appealing For Olympic Spots

Fifteen Russians have been denied a request for an invitation to the 2018 Winter Olympics

Last week, 28 Russians had life bans from the Olympics overturned by CAS, prompting 15 of them to apply to take part in Pyeongchang. Thirteen of group have either retired or are unavailable for undisclosed reasons.

The 32 athletes all failed to pass the mandatory International Olympic Committee vetting for Russian athletes - imposed as a result of Russian doping at the 2014 Olympics - and weren't invited to the Games.

Any Russians who win late invitations would compete under "Olympic Athletes from Russia" because the Russian team is formally banned for doping at the Sochi Olympics.

The IOC has banned Russian Federation from the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics starting later this week over "systematic manipulation" of the anti-doping system in Sochi but 169 athletes with no history of doping have been invited to compete as neutrals.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said that the ban was humiliating, but stopped short of calling for a boycott despite other officials saying their national athletes should not compete.

On Sunday, IOC President Thomas Bach called the CAS ruling "extremely disappointing and surprising" and said it showed the Swiss-based CAS needs "reforms". The IOC says the athletes have undergone rigorous anti-doping testing.

Because of this, they can't wear any uniforms or apparel representing them as Russian Olympic athletes, and the rules about what they can wear are fairly strict.

We're just days away from the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"Therefore, the panel unanimously recommended that the IOC not extend an invitation to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 to the 15 individuals requested by the suspended ROC", it said. They'll simply be "Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation". Those athletes competing in the Games will remain under scrutiny these next three weeks.

On Thursday, Cas overturned the suspensions of 28 of those, and partially upheld 11 other appeals.

The organizing committee reported no confirmed cases among athletes. Russian Federation was suspended over an institutionalized, government-funded doping system and the systematic manipulation of anti-doping tests.

At 2008 Beijing Olympics, 100,000 were given out, wrapped in the packaging with the then-Olympic motto of "Higher, Faster, Stronger" which gave the tradition even more publicity.

This week Pound, a former Olympic swimmer for Canada, criticized the IOC, saying the sanctions against Russian Federation have not gone far enough.

Whatever the WADA's failings, whistleblowers everywhere should neither forget nor forgive the International Olympic Committee, including President Thomas Bach, for their weak-kneed responses to Russia's efforts to retaliate against Rodchenkov - including inexcusable calls to execute him, harassment of his family, seizure of his assets and attempts to silence him by bringing politically motivated criminal charges against him after his testimony was revealed.
