US Troops With Syrian Rebels Come Under Attack, But No Americans Injured

The US-led coalition conducted defensive airstrikes against pro-government forces in Syria that attacked Syrian Democratic Forces headquarters near the Euphrates River, US Central Command said in a press release Wednesday.

The coalition said Wednesday's strikes had been carried out after forces allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "initiated an unprovoked attack" against a well-established Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) headquarters where coalition advisers were working with US-backed Syrian fighters, reports CNN.

The U.S. -led coalition had alerted Russian officials about the presence of SDF forces in the area far in advance of the thwarted attack, the U.S. official said.

No U.S. personnel were injured in the attack by the pro-regime forces, unnamed officials separately told U.S. media.

There are about 2,000 American troops in Syria, mostly operating in support of the Syrian Democratic Force (SDF), a Kurdish-dominated group that have helped expel the Islamic State from most areas it once controlled. But the Trump administration's hope for a lessening of hostilities in Syria's larger civil war has not materialized so far, as Turkish, Russian, Iranian and other forces are brought into ever closer proximity as they vie to determine control of and pursue their own long-term interests in Syria.

Officials said no USA troops were injured or killed.

German coalition deal sets no timetable to end glyphosate use
However, the SPD's parliamentary leader Andrea Nahles told her party that they would "negotiate until the other side squeals" . Her first attempt to form a coalition with smaller parties failed when talks collapsed in November .

He said the coalition suspected that pro-regime forces were attempting to seize territory, including lucrative oil fields, that the Syrian Democratic Forces had liberated from ISIS in September.

The coalition remains committed to focusing on that mission in the Middle Euphrates River Valley and asserts its non-negotiable right to act in self-defense, officials said.

There was no immediate comment from Damascus about the USA -led strikes on the positions of the pro-government forces in Deir al-Zour. "Russian officials assured Coalition officials they would not engage Coalition forces in the vicinity".

The CENTCOM statement did not specify who the aggressors were, as the term "pro-regime" could refer to Syrian pro-government forces or the Russian army - with which incidents have escalated in recent months as the combat zone narrows.

The U.S. Navy also launched a volley of Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airfield in April after Assad's troops used chemical weapons against civilians.
