Suspect In NFL Player's Death Has Bay Area DUI, Was Deported Twice

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and another man were struck and killed in a suspected drunken driving accident early Sunday morning

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said he will pay for both men's funerals.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County coroner's office.

Clark expects the suspect will face numerous serious charges.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, who is from Guatemala and has twice been deported from the US, is charged with causing death while driving intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

Jeffrey Monroe, 54, had been an Uber driver for more than two years. "The guy made a mistake and obviously it cost two people's lives", Bouchez said. But he notes that there's already "pretty strong circumstantial evidence in the case".

The man suspected of killing a Colts player and an Uber driver in a drunk driving crash was previously convicted of driving under the influence in California.

Jackson was 26 years old. He was charged Wednesday with four felony counts.

Tragedy has struck the Colts and Jackson's death will forever be remembered in the hearts of the fans and the organization.

In the 2005 case, he pleaded no contest to two separate drunken-driving offenses and was given a brief jail sentence, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Tuesday.

He added that the fatal accident highlights the need for building a U.S. -Mexico border wall, "ending sanctuary cities, and stopping illegal immigration once and for all".

The attorney for a Guatemalan man charged in a drunken-driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and another man says his client is distraught and confused.

President Donald Trump is not a stranger to responding controversially to tragedy.

Orrego-Savala faces up to 10 years in prison on the immigration charge, which the US attorney's office said would be handled after any state charges are resolved. ICE said it has placed an immigration detainer on Orrego-Savala at the Marion County Jail.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, left, and Edwin Jackson. The charges include causing death while driving intoxicated.

An immigrant who was living illegally in IN when he was arrested in a suspected drunken-driving crash that killed an National Football League player had a history of misdemeanor convictions and arrests, including at least two previous instances of driving under the influence, authorities said Tuesday.

A Marion County judge entered a not guilty plea for 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala during a court hearing Wednesday.

The crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. along I-70, according to the Indianapolis Star.

When Orrego-Savala appeared before the judge he was assisted by an interpreter.

"So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson", Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

Orrego-Savala was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in October 2006, and deported to Guatemala in January 2007, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Police say the 26-year-old Jackson and 54-year-old Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe were standing outside Monroe's auto along I-70 when they were struck by a pickup truck that Orrego-Savala was driving.

"Drunk driving has nothing to do with immigration status", Torres said.

Federal prosecutors on Tuesday charged Orrego-Zavala with illegal re-entry into the United States, a crime for which he could face 10 years in prison. The driver, who had been using the alias Alex Cabrera Gonsales, is a citizen of Guatemala. Indiana's legal limit is 0.08 percent. He faces up to 10 years in prison on that charge, which the US attorney's office said would be handled after any state charges are resolved. They recalled him as being caring and amusing. He used a similar name when state police arrested him Sunday. Orrego-Savala's truck drove onto the emergency shoulder and hit the rear of the vehicle that struck Jackson and Monroe.
