Syrian Army Shoots Down Israeli Jet after 'Aggression' on Base

No ‘Russian option’ for Israel in Syria

The ongoing confrontations are seen as the most serious between archenemies Israel and Iran since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

Iran, meanwhile, issued its first official response to the events, with its Foreign Ministry rejecting as "ridiculous" reports that Israel had intercepted an Iranian drone launched from Syria.

In subsequent attacks, the Israeli military said it struck four additional Iranian positions and eight Syrian sites, causing significant damage.

"Syrians are playing with fire when they allow Iranians to attack Israel", Conricus warned.

Later, Syria state TV said its air defences responded to new Israeli raids near the capital Damascus.

Qasemi went on to say, "Iran only provides military advice to Syria based on the request of the country's legitimate government".

Tensions on Israel's northern border have been rising in recent months as Israel fears that Iran is entrenching itself deeper into Syria with its presence on Israel's borders growing in strength. The drone that entered Israeli airspace was shot down and retrieved, he said. In a statement, it said Israel had targeted an air base in the Homs desert that is being used to fly drones in missions against Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group, Reuters reported.

"Anti-aircraft missiles were fired towards Israel, triggering alarms in northern Israel", the IDF tweeted. Gen Bar said it faced massive anti-aircraft fire, forcing the two pilots to eject.

Both pilots aboard the Israeli jet are safe, the Israeli army said, although one pilot was severely injured as a result of an emergency evacuation from the plane. It claims to have received confirmation that hits on an Iranian control facility were accurate.

The Israeli attacks came in response to what the Israeli military said was the incursion of Israeli airspace early Saturday by an Iranian drone.

Israeli aircraft then attacked Syrian and "Iranian targets in Syria", the military says.

He also threatened the United States, saying that his country had the military power to destroy all American bases in the region.

It adds: "Our air defences repelled it and hit more than one plane".

Sources in Damascus said there were casualties among Syrian forces.

Air raid sirens had gone off in Israel in the early hours of the morning following the UAV interception and raids.

Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said Israeli forces were "fully prepared for further action".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gadi Eizenkot at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv.

A military alliance backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that any other incursion by Israel would be met with "serious and fierce" retaliation.

In an attempt to contain Iran and its proxies, Israel has regularly carried out airstrikes inside Syria, though it has in the past refrained from acknowledging its responsibility for specific bombings.

"We won't accept either of those, and will act according to our needs", Netanyahu said following the meeting with Putin.
