10 terrorists killed in police raid in Egypt's Sinai

Egyptian troops in North Sinai

Egypt's armed forces on Friday launched airstrikes against alleged terror organisations in north and central Sinai, while three alleged members of a militant group were killed by security forces in the capital Cairo, the opening moves in a major new nationwide security operation, officials said. Col.

A total of 16 militants were killed, it said, and four militants were captured.

The growing military cooperation between Israel and Egypt has always been rumored and in June, Israel's Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) noted that if the frequent claims of anti-terror coordination were accurate it would show "the level of trust between the nations has reached the point where Israel is providing various military, technological and operational intelligence to Egypt and is operating attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) in Sinai with Cairo's approval".

On Friday, the army and naval forces began a military operation named "Full-Scale Operation in Sinai 2018" against terrorists in Sinai affiliated to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group (previously known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis), Military spokesman Colonel Tamer al-Rifai announced.

El-Sissi, who has waged one of the most sweeping crackdowns on dissent in Egypt's modern history, says he is the only one who can restore Egypt's security.

Egypt denied this, and Israel declined to comment.

More weather warnings issued for Ireland
A spokesman said: "A very cold westerly airstream will bring frequent snow showers to many western and central areas on Sunday ". Connacht, alongside counties of Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal have been given rain warnings, registered as status yellow as well.

Egypt's security forces have been increasingly targeted by extremists since the army in 2013 overthrew Mr El Sisi's predecessor, president Mohammed Morsi.

Violence has been concentrated in north Sinai, but has also spread to the mainland.

And last September Sissi met Netanyahu for the first time in public, the encounter coming ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in NY. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the mosque attack though.

"Operation Sinai 2018", which involves the air force and navy, is also to target jihadists in the Nile Delta and Western Desert near the border with Libya.

Hundreds of police and army personnel were killed since then.
