Women's giant slalom postponed because of strong winds

The grueling morning routine of US Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin, who sleeps 10 hours, doesn't drink coffee, and is poised to be the best skier in the world

Monday's women's giant slalom event was postponed in PyeongChang due to risky winds that have reached 40-45 miles per hour. She admits that the last four years have passed in a haze.

Not so much physically exhausted - although that is a constant factor with the daily grind of the World Cup circuit - as she was simply mentally wiped out.

At that point, the U.S. coaches have the final say on who races as the best medal contender, with Shiffrin allowed the option to pull herself out of races if she doesn't feel prepared. Initially a slalom specialist, Shiffrin has expanded her repertoire to become one of the best in the world in the giant slalom as well.

Shiffrin herself told The New York Times that she doesn't think there's a proper way to raise an Olympic champion, in that the "crazy path" she took "could not be replicated". But in six appearances since that run of perfection, Shiffrin finished third once, seventh twice and not completed the course on three occasions. Twenty-three or something. I can't imagine myself being mentioned in the same sentence as... "Right now I'm focusing on giant slalom and slalom and after that switching the focus to speed".

"Then after that I got exhausted, going into the Cortina series put me over the edge a little bit". "I'm not very fun to be around, and I can't focus as easily".

"The thing that gives me the most satisfaction is the skiing part of it".

The 22-year-old Shiffrin is pegged by many as someone who could be a transcendent figure over the next two weeks.

Reich agrees to become Colts HC
The Colts can not repeat the embarrassment of unpredictability they experienced with their pursuit of McDaniels. Reich emerged as the leader for the Colts job after McDaniels turned it down after last minute on Tuesday.

"Right now, we're looking at any possibility", she said.

Mikaela Shiffrin's historic quest for gold will have to wait at least another day.

"I had heard before Sochi that it's a good place to keep your medal, you put it in a sock and it keeps it kind of safe and then you can pack it away somewhere".

"I'm feeling good", she said. "But I'm not actually sure whether I'll have the energy to do (all) that", she says.

She couldn't help but laugh when a reporter asked what her reaction is to being compared with Michael Phelps, the USA swimmer who is the most decorated Olympian in history. "It's insane how fast the time has gone", she says. "OK, he has, what, 23 medals?"

Shiffrin has one medal so far.
