Google wants to bring Smart Reply to every chat app

Google's internal incubator is working to expand the functionality into other major chat apps.

Google's Smart Reply feature could be extended to several popular chat apps, including Facebook Messenger, Android Messages, and Slack. But as a hint of how it would work, Area 120 said the plan is to offer Smart Replies right into the notifications tab, supposedly when the user receives a notification from the above-mentioned third-party chat apps.

Pegged "Reply", the feature would use artificial intelligence (AI) to suggest one-tap responses to incoming messages. Reply will be able to silence users' phone when they are driving, and it will also inform people who send a message that the user can not chat at the moment. Do you wish a robot could free you of your constant communication obligations via WhatsApp, Facebook or text messages?

Google's Smart Reply uses the firm's neural network to intelligently analyse a message's content to suggest an appropriate response. Offering similar technology across a range of apps - and potentially only for Android users - could help push some users to adopt Android over iOS; or could prompt them to move to Gmail when they see how useful Smart Reply technology can be. It will also include a variety of other automated features such as a Do Not Disturb mode and a Vacation Responder that checks your calendar to tell people you're not working.

UFC 221: Romero stuns Rockhold with crushing KO despite suspected 'broken leg'
After two closely contested rounds, Romero exploded with an overhand left, which dropped the former middleweight champion. The bad news, however, is that it's unclear whether Romero will be healthy enough to get into the Octagon anytime soon.

Area 120's vision is to have Reply take over all the busy work when it comes to responding to messages of all kinds. It can silence the user's phone when they're driving and tell people who message them that the user is busy, or even bring certain messages to the user's attention even if the phone is on silent.

Google is calling the new messaging app "Reply", and it is still in the very early stages of testing.

The project, like all Area 120 projects, is unrelated to any broader developments at Google - in this case, that means it's not directly tied to Google's messaging efforts.

Now it appears as though Google wants to bring its Smart Reply feature to other messaging apps as well. "Like all other projects within Area 120, it's a very early experiment so there aren't many details to share right now".
