Prince Henrik: Danish prince denied title of King dies

Denmark queen’s consort Prince Henrik dies at 83

Prince Henrik, the husband of Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, has died at the age of 83.

According to the Royal House the Prince "died peacefully in his sleep" at Fredensborg Castle.

With sons Crown Prince Frederik (L) and Prince Joachim, 1975.

The 83-year-old prince is the father of Crown Prince Frederik, who is married to Australian-born Princess Mary.

In summer 2017, Prince Henrik announced he did not want to be buried next to his wife.

The palace said it would respect Henrik's wish to be cremated, with half his ashes spread over Danish seas and the other half buried in the royal family's private garden at the Fredensborg Palace, north of Copenhagen, where he died. It was determined a few days later that the Prince had a benign tumour on his left lung.

Born Henri Marie Jean Andre de Laborde de Monpezat on June 11, 1934 in Talence, near Bordeaux, Henrik spent much of his youth in Vietnam, then a part of Indochina, where his father was a businessman.

After a 2009 Danish referendum supported sexual equality in royal successions, Henrik said: "I hope that men will be as equal as girls", spurring further debate and briefly finding support in parliament in favour of granting him the title of king, a movement that came to nothing.

He studied law and politics at Paris-Sorbonne University as well as at the French National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations.

Since then many Episcopal churches across the country have joined in to offer Ashes to Go , particularly at key commuter lines. The Catholic Church and a few other Christian denominations observe the occasion in fasting, abstinence, and prayer.

In his early 30s, Prince Henrik worked in the Asia section of the French Ministry of Affairs at the French embassy in London.

Upon marrying Margrethe, he changed his name to Henrik, converted from Catholicism to Protestantism and renounced his French citizenship to become a Dane.

"People are just used to considering Prince Henrik as. a little dog that follows behind and gets a sugar cube once in a while", he said.

The polyglot, who spoke his native French, Danish, English, Chinese and Vietnamese, married Princess Margrethe of Denmark (heir apparent to the Danish throne) on 10 June 1967.

He said he was unhappy she had never acknowledged him as her equal.

If this went ahead, Crown Prince Frederik, 49, would become king - making Crown Princess Mary, 46, queen consort. But his title was prince consort - something he was openly frustrated about for years.

The BBC reported at the time that Queen Margrethe "accepted her husband's decision".
