Shaun White refers to sexual misconduct allegations in lawsuit as 'gossip'

Shaun White speaks at a news conference

An uncharacteristic mistake on his second run allowed the airborne Hirano to nearly literally fly into the lead with a thrilling run for 95.25, meaning the pressure switched back to White to deliver when it mattered most.

White had responded with the second flawless score of his career in the pre-Games US trials, a result which drew some criticism from contemporaries, including Australian bronze medallist Scotty James, who intimated the American's vast fame precluded the ability to make a subjective judgement.

Shaun White won USA's 100th gold medal at Winter Olympics.

The US team now trails only Norway (118 going into PyeongChang 2018) in the total of Winter Olympics gold medals.

White's historic achievement was lauded by fellow Olympic legends, including swimmer Michael Phelps, sprinter Michael Johnson and gymnast Nadia Comaneci, the first gymnast to be awarded a ideal score of 10.0 at the Olympics.

"These medals have spanned almost 100 years and showcase the dedication to excellence that is central to Team USA and the entire US Olympic family".

There could be no argument about White's dominance over his contemporaries on the slopes above Gangneung on Wednesday as he became the first snowboarder to land three Olympics titles. His score of 94.25 was tops after the first of the three finals runs, but Hirano recovered after sitting down during his first trip to put White on notice during the second. Hirano responded immediately, uncorking back-to-back 1440s.

Hirano missed an opportunity to go even higher when he washed out on his final run. This moment required something more. "Yeah, it's really cool".

Zuma will respond to ANC exit order on Wednesday - top party official
The Hawks, South Africa's priority crime unit, confirmed they searched the Gupta's walled compound near Johannesburg zoo. The recall echoes a scenario that ultimately saw former president Thabo Mbeki resigning from office in 2008.

That created a pressure situation for White on his third attempt.

But there was a scare for 16-year-old Yuto Totsuka. His repeat performance in Vancouver four years later, one he finished by stomping a "Double McTwist 1260" with gold already in hand, cemented his status as arguably the greatest ever in his sport.

This time around, it felt different.

Over the last four years, White has found himself pushed by competitors like Hirano and James.

White's loss in Sochi led him to do more than a fair amount of soul searching in the aftermath.

The 76-page complaint filed by Lena Zawaideh paints an ugly picture of the much-loved Olympian, describing him as a controlling, self-obsessed misogynist who made her life hell over seven years.

In the interim, the sport that he defined went on without him. Every single halfpipe run from White, Hirano and James can be found further below on this page.

Labeled as snowboarding's next big thing at 13, the 5-foot-2 Hirano is a twisting, flipping, boundary-pushing whirl hardly afraid at taking on his idol.
