A shooting erupted Wednesday outside the suburban Washington headquarters of the National Security Agency, a secretive intelligence organisation responsible for global USA electronic eavesdropping, leaving at least one person injured, officials said.

Sources say that three people were shot in the incident and Fort Meade officials have confirmed that one person was hospitalized.

'NSA police and local law enforcement are addressing an incident that took place this morning at one of NSA's security vehicle entry gates.

The NSA said the situation was under control, advising motorists that a highway leading to the complex was closed in both direction "due to a police investigation".
