Trump Cuts $200 Million From 'Food Stamp' Program

Instead of actual food stamps, the administration wants to replace a portion of that with food delivered to recipients' front doors, CNBC reported.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) noted that under the plan, which is included in the 2019 budget, those receiving more than $90 a month in benefits would receive "nutritious, U.S. -grown and produced food" in a "Harvest Box" that would make up half of a recipient's allotted benefits for the month.

White House Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney compared the SNAP food package to Blue Apron.

The Trump administration said it wants to replace cash benefits with boxes of government food.

Explained Hatcher: "FMI and our members have worked with the House and Senate Agriculture Committees and the USDA over several decades to achieve a national system, utilizing existing commercial infrastructure and technology to achieve the greatest efficiency, availability and lowest cost". "The SNAP, or food stamp program, is a bedrock of existence for a lot of very poor people".

Smaller convenience stores in the Wilmington area, who wished to remain anonymous, said the change would reduce their sales, but to a lesser degree than food stores.

Minister warns charities of funding cuts after Oxfam sex worker scandal
She added: "If the moral leadership at the top of the organisation isn't there, then we cannot have you as a partner". The news comes after Oxfam workers were accused of using prostitutes in Haiti following the 2010 quake .

But a government program delivering non-perishable foods at a discount bears little semblance to Blue Apron, a meal delivery service which says it only delivers farm-fresh, seasonal produce, meat with no hormones, and sustainably-sourced seafood, among other expensive and fresh foods.

Reaction was muted on Capitol Hill, where both congressional agriculture committees are working on reauthorizations of the food stamp program as part of a farm law that expires September 30.

Trump officials told reporters on Monday that the reforms would affect approximately 16 million Americans who now participate in SNAP, or 81 percent of households in the program. Perdue said in early December that he wanted states to have more flexibility in doling out SNAP, announcing the agency wanted to hear about programs from states that don't increase the cost of the program and will combat what he said is fraud and waste. "SNAP is one of the most efficient federal social safety net programs, because retailers are the linchpin of a successful public-private partnership".

One of my favorite Youtube pundits is Uncle Hotep, an independent pundit who humorously analyzes the proposal and deems the food package the "Trump Box". But consumer watchdogs question whether such a program would actually save money and have further doubts about the government picking out food for millions of Americans.

In a symbolic budget proposal unveiled Monday, the Trump administration called for sharp spending reductions in a variety of anti-poverty programs.
