Turkey pledges $5B in loans, investment for Iraq reconstruction, FM Çavuşoğlu says

On Wednesday, the United Nations launched a two-year Recovery and Resilience programme created to help Iraq's government fast-track the social dimensions of reconstruction.

Heading a diplomatic delegation, the Iranian foreign minister has travelled to Kuwait to join officials from more than 70 countries and global organizations for the worldwide Conference on the Reconstruction of Iraq, which opened on Monday.

Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to support the humanitarian situation in Iraq recommended Monday to implement humanitarian and development programs, worth 335 million US dollars, in Iraqi areas affected by armed conflicts.

It will cost nearly $90bn (£65.1bn) to rebuild war-torn Iraq after three years of bitter fighting with Islamic State (Isis).

Iraq, which still owes Kuwait reparations from the 1991 Gulf War, declared victory over Islamic State in December, having taken back all the territory the jihadist group captured in 2014 and 2015. "Let's not make it more so", one official said in describing the administration's view.
