Amazon to Lay Off Hundreds of Corporate Employees

Amazon is cutting hundreds of corporate jobs at its Seattle headquarters, along with hundreds more around the world.

In a statement, Amazon.com Inc. says it is still hiring aggressively in some areas and will consider those affected for other roles. The newspaper reported that Amazon's rapid pace of growth over the last two years has "left some units over budget and some teams with too much staff for their work". Amazon's consumer organization includes its retail and marketplace businesses, as well as programs like food delivery service Amazon Restaurants.

"Accomplish more with less".

Shares were up almost 3% on Monday.

Amazon recently went on a hiring spree and took in more than 40,000 workers.

In a rare cutback, Amazon is reportedly laying off hundreds of corporate employees at its Seattle headquarters. In comments earlier this month, Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said the company was going to "double down" on Alexa following better-than-expected success from its voice-activated software. As per the sources, the impacted employees will be offered other positions in the company.

Mr Bezos has prized rapid expansion over profitability and has increased Amazon's workforce almost fourfold over three years to...

It appears the company isn't looking to reduce its overall headcount. Amazon has said that those being cut are being given the option to be assigned to a different division in the company that is growing.

Last year, Amazon closed Diapers and other sites operated by Quidsi, which it announced a. And they come while the company looks to expand on its lead in new businesses like Alexa.

Amazon is the second-largest US -based corporate employer. Amazon has said the city that wins will receive over $5 billion in investments and 50,000 job openings. Amazon is also making manufacturers and suppliers do more work - such as coordinating marketing and promotions - things that Amazon used to handle internally, he said.
