Jayalalithaa portrait unveiled in TN Assembly: DMK, Congress boycott

Referring to Jayalalithaa who was the first accused (A1) in the case, the court observed, "However, though in the process of scrutiny of the facts and the law involved and the inextricable nexus of A1 with A2 to A4, reference to her role as well as the evidence pertaining to her had been made, she having expired meanwhile, the appeals, so far as those relate to her, stand abated".

"It could never have been the intention of the then speakers to hang portraits of convicts, culprits or persons convicted of offences involving moral turpitude like corruption", the petitioner said.

That's why opposition parties led by the DMK have announced that they would boycott the function on Monday.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and the Speaker recalled the achievements of Jayalalithaa and her contribution to the society throughout her political career.

The new TV deal sees Sky and BT swap their slots on Saturday, with Sky also landing the new batch of Saturday night games. Sky Sports is to broadcast 128 games per season, including 32 matches on a Saturday at 17:30.

"When a leader in the Opposition benches described me as the "chella pillai" (dear child) of Amma (Jayalalithaa), I immediately quipped: Not only me, all 1.5 crore cadre of AIADMK are "chella pillais" of Amma". AIADMK presidium chairman E Madhusudanan, who occupied the chair of deputy leader of opposition Durai Murugan, and party veterans P H Pandian, C Ponnaiyan and K P Munusamy (in dark glasses due to conjunctivitis) were present. Other parties including Left, DMDK and PMK also opposed the move to unveil Jayalalithaa's portrait while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was in support of the government's action. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief S Thirunavukkarasar said the matter would be brought to the notice of the party high command. "We urge the Tamil Nadu government to give up this step".

Stalin claimed the Speaker of the House does not have the authority or moral right to unveil the portrait and said it was his duty to request Dhanapal not to do so.

DMK's MK Stalin terming Monday as "black day" said, "This move has brought down the dignity and sanctity of the House". The Speaker's autocratic, illegal and arbitrary action of unveiling the portrait of Jayalalithaa was untenable and can not be countenanced in law or on morality, the counsel said.

The AIADMK's rivals today opposed the ruling party's decision to unveil J Jayalalithaa's portrait in the Assembly claiming that she was "convicted" in a disproportionate assets case, while the main opposition DMK chose to boycott the event tomorrow.
