No medal for Lindsey Vonn in super-G at her last Olympics

Ester Ledecka

The 22-year-old, who is among the favourites in the parallel giant slalom snowboarding, could barely believe it herself.

Vonn joked that she was happy she didn't finish fourth.

Vonn won an Olympic bronze medal in super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Games, where she took gold in downhill. Four years later, a right knee injury prevented her from attempting to defend her Olympic title.

So it was a thrill to be back on the Olympic stage this time for what she has said will be the final go-round.

Weather postponements led American ski star Mikaela Shiffrin to skip the super-G competition so she loaned her skis to Ledecka, who has only been competing in the event for two years - never finishing better than 29th. Winning bronze at the last two worlds' in Beaver Creek and St. Moritz in the Super-G and downhill respectively, the St. Paul skier tentatively offered signs the comeback trail was well on track. Vonn, 33, will look to become Alpine Skiing's oldest female Olympic medalist with a podium effort.

Despite not medaling in the event, Vonn said she was proud of the way she competed.

"He [The Rock] said he's going to help me after the season and I can follow him around a little bit and see if it's really something that I would potentially be able to do".

Winter Storm Watch Called For Saturday Night
In the mountains, the snow-pack is roughly at 65% of normal for the season, with the southern mountain areas in the worst shape. But most of the state will be shoveling by Sunday morning after a quick 3"-6" of snow.

Entering a jump-turn combination, Vonn allowed one of her skis to lift off the snow too much and swept several feet wide of the proper path, barely clearing a gate.

Vonn was drawn to be the first racer down the hill at Jeongseon Alpine Center.

She won three World Cup downhills in a row before heading to South Korea.

Eight seconds later she was in the finish area, grabbing her head in frustration.

The Minnesotan however, has not taken her eye off the prize of completing her nearly five-year odyssey from being on top of the world and from injury to rehabilitation by winning the women's blue-riband event in South Korea.

Lindsey Vonn had a rough start to the 2018 Winter Olympics in the women's super-G event, where the Team USA skier did not earn a medal with her 1 minute and 21.49 second time.
