Five people have been killed after gunman opened fire with a hunting rifle on worshippers leaving a church service in Russia's Dagestan region.

"The killed shooter was identified as Khalil Khalilov, 22, a resident of Rassvet village of Dagestan's Tarumovsky District", the statement, published on the town administration's website, read.

The attack took place in Kizlyar, a town of about 50,000 people on the Terek River delta on the border with Chechnya, Tass said.

The injured include two members of local security services and two civilians, also women, the Interfax news agency said.

Another of the victims - all of whom were female - died of her injuries in hospital, according to a spokesperson for the regional ministry of internal affairs.

"We had finished the mass and were beginning to leave the church", Father Pavel was quoted as saying. Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case under Articles 105.2 (murder with aggravating circumstances) and 317 (attempt on the life of a law enforcer) of the Russian Criminal Code.
