Some Gravy Train, Kibbles 'N Bits cans withdrawn over sedative concern

JM Smucker Co. voluntarily withdrew some shipments of 27 pet food products after media reports of pentobarbital contamination was found in some of its dog food brand Gravy Train.

Only one brand, Gravy Train, repeatedly tested positive for trace amounts of pentobarbital, according to ABC7.

"It's a tranquilizing drug that is sometimes used by veterinarians in animal shelters to reduce anxiety in animals and ultimately put them to sleep", said Jackie Bowen, the executive director of Clean Label Project.

According to a statement on the company's website, low levels of pentobarbital were found in the recalled dog food.

A spokesperson for the FDA said this week that the regulatory agency's first evaluation of the results from testing samples of Gravy Train indicates that the there is a low level presence of pentobarbital in product that was withdrawn but is not likely to pose any health risk to pets.

Days after lab tests were released, Smucker's, the owner of nearly all the brands in question, announced a voluntary withdrawal of products including Gravy Train, Kibbles "N Bits, Skippy and Ol" Roy lines of canned food. The products were distributed to retailers across the USA.

PNB fraud: CBI arrests three including two PNB officials
The bank, which has $120 billion in total assets, has lost more than a fifth of its market value since it disclosed the fraud. PNB has acknowledged the fraud from its Brady House branch in Mumbai but it has remained non committal on its liabilities.

While all 18 products on the FDA list were included in the Smucker information, several Gravy Train, Skippy and Kibbles 'N Bits products named by the company were absent from the FDA list.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Company initiated a voluntary product withdrawal and has taken action to remove specific shipments that were impacted from its supply chain as well as provided actionable information to its consumers and retail partners. Consumers who purchased these products should safely dispose of the cans and/or contact the Sucker company for information about returning the products.

Traces of pentobarbital can end up in pet food that's made with meat from animals that have been euthanized - including dogs and cats.

To help make sure the food you're feeding your pet is safe, the Clean Label Project has just posted the results from tests of popular pet food brands that it did past year.

The J.M. Smucker Co. says they don't believe the amount of pentobarbital in the food will result in your dog showing any symptoms of illness but veterinarians still recommend throwing the food away.
