Winter Olympic medal totals: Canada has 27

Lindsey Vonn

The days of Tara Lipinski, Michelle Kwan and Kristi Yamaguchi keep receding farther into history. The U.S. beat Canada for gold at the debut event.

Especially the way the Russians have come to dominate women's figure skating. This is like a dance competition, but on the ice.

Canada's speedskating bronze medallist Kim Boutin pictured at the Medals Plaza in Pyeongchang, South Korea on February 14, 2018.

That opened the door for the United States to force a tie-breaker with Japan if they beat Sweden, but the Americans failed to close the deal as they lost 9-6 to the Swedes in extra ends.

So why did everything go wrong?

Where are this generation's Peggy Fleming, Kristi Yamaguchi and Tara Lipinski? "It's a good question without an easy answer". Most of her competitors had done that many in an entire season. In the US, winter sports like hockey, snowboarding and skiing are dominated by white athletes from higher-income families. The fallout was noticeable within U.S. Figure Skating, where membership declined three straight years. Diggins passed the Swedes and the Norwegians on the final lap to win the first Olympic gold medal for the United States in the sport.

The week's most-watched non-Olympics program was the CBS news magazine, "60 Minutes", which averaged 7.511 million viewers. Of those, one individual gold and one bronze are owned by athletes with ties to Minnesota.

"We have created a show that looks towards the future", he says. "It's not for everyone".

In fact, speedskating has produced more Olympic medals for the USA than any other winter sport.

That's 50 percent more than what American medalists earned at the 2016 Summer Games.

Trump Repeats Call For Armed Teachers, Stronger Background Checks
The White House has said Trump will soon lay out a package of school and gun safety proposals for Congress to consider. The president wondered why the US protects airports, banks and government buildings "but not our schools".

At a news conference after the competition, the top two medalists - both teenagers representing Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation - said the indomitable Kostner had been an inspiration. The Italians finished fourth in the team event. The U.S. secured a bronze in 2006 games in Turin. It was interesting to hear the little tricks Menard makes his athletes do so they can mentally step out of the way and allow their bodies to do their job. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee explained Mo fell in training as the reason for replacing him with Cha, another surprise medal victor this games, with silver in the 500.

"It's a huge honor and privilege", Lipinski said.

Despite my distaste for Olympic competition, there are aspects of the overall spectacle that even a detractor like me can appreciate.

The events will be broadcast on NBC and NBCSN (all times Eastern).

Those are all signs the sport is beginning another upswing.

Kruger's silver in the 1,500 was the only American short-track medal, equaling the showing from four years ago in Sochi.

So yes, Medvedeva skates with the timing and precision of a Swiss watch, and Zagitova has the uncanny ability to land jumps without ever growing exhausted.

It was the second straight Olympic gold for Wise, who put down the most hard, technically precise run ever seen in the sport of halfpipe skiing.

The Americans are now on pace for 26 medals, which is in line with what they have done during most recent Olympiads.
