Sweden's Andre Myhrer wins men's slalom

Marcel Hirscher

Shiffrin departs South Korea with two medals after she won gold in giant slalom and despite wild pre-Olympic predictions of her sweeping every event she entered, the American was satisfied with her return. Belarus' Yuri Danilochkin placed 33rd, BelTA informs. Andre Myhrer won the gold medal in a time of 1:38.99 in total. That allowed Ramon Zenhaeusern of Switzerland to take an unexpected silver medal, 0.34 seconds behind Myhrer.

Meanwhile, GB's Dave Ryding secured a top-10 spot when coming ninth in his third Olympic Games, with the 31-year-old finishing 1.17 seconds behind Myrher.

Even when Hirscher went out, though, Zenhaeusern was not certain that he would be fast enough to win Switzerland a first Olympic medal in men's slalom since Jacques Luethy's bronze in 1980.

Yuri Danilochkin of Belarus placed 33rd, 13.16 seconds behind the victor.

The 28-year-old Austrian star was the big favorite in slalom, his specialty, but he skied out early in the opening run.

"It's so exciting. It's insane I really thought it's so hard to ski so fast in slalom", Gisin told reporters.

Austria's Anna Gasser won the inaugural women's big air in snowboarding by landing a cab double cork 1080, one of the sport's most hard tricks, on her final jump.

In Gangneung, the US women's team won it all 20 years after their last gold medal in women's hockey and 38 years to the day after the men's famous "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Lake Placid Games.

Italy, Poland, France and Slovakia all headed the pack at some point but it wasn't until Domracheva, who won a silver medal in the mass start, took over on the final leg that the field started to stretch out.

"I knew it was possible, but that also I had to go full-on attack, 100 percent".

He went into the second and final run in second place behind Kristoffersen, who went fastest in the morning and looked to have one hand on the title.

There was delight for Michelle Gisin, disappointment for Marcel Hirscher, record-breaking joy for Wu Dajing and sweet ice hockey revenge for United States' women's team during another action-packed day at the Winter Olympics.

Hungary rounded off the short track action by winning the men's 5,000m relay.
