10 dead in Egypt train accident

Rescue workers search at the wreckage after a train crash in Kom Hamada in the northern province of Beheira.-Reuters

At least 15 people were killed and 40 injured on Wednesday in a collision between two trains in Beheira province, north of the capital Cairo, the Egyptian Health Ministry said in a statement.

Footage broadcast on state television showed one train had partly keeled over in the crash, and medics were seen moving the dead and injured to ambulances.

Wednesday's report by the MENA news agency quotes the spokesman of the Health Ministry as saying the collision took place in the town of Kom Hamada.

Egypt's public prosecutor assigned an engineering committee to find out the reasons behind the crash.

In August, two passenger trains collided just outside Egypt's Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, killing 43 people, the country's deadliest rail accident in more than a decade.

API reports growth in United States oil inventories
USA crude inventories have fallen more than 100 million barrels in 12 months, to their lowest in three years. London Brent crude slipped 3 cents to $67.28 a barrel, after climbing nearly 4 percent last week.

The train drivers who survived that accident were detained for questioning. Months later a train carrying military conscripts derailed, killing 17 people.

Egyptians have long complained that successive governments have failed to enforce basic safety standards for the railways.

In July 2008, at least 44 people died near Marsa Matruh in northwest Egypt when a runaway truck hurtled into a bus and several other vehicles waiting at a level crossing, shunting them into the path of a train.

AT least 16 have been killed and 20 more are injured in a horrific train crash in Egypt.
