Anti-Semitic Incidents Rose to Largest Single-Year Increase in 2017, Report Finds

Incidents of anti-Semitism across New York City jumped more than 90 percent in 2017, according to a report released Tuesday by the Anti-Defamation League. In 2017, K-12 schools surpassed public areas as the locations with the highest number of anti-Semitic incidents.

The ADL's annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents reports: "ADL identified 1,986 anti-Semitic incidents perpetrated throughout the United States in 2017".

That's one of the main takeaways from the Anti-Defamation League's 2017 Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents, which was released this week.

"We've never had a moment like this", said Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the New York-based group, according to the LA Times. "We work in schools address about what is intolerance what is bullying".

There were 1,267 incidents in 2016, said the ADL, which added there was at least one incident a year ago in all 50 states for the first time in at least a decade.

NY was followed by California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida and Pennsylvania in terms of having the most anti-Semitic acts in 2017.

The largest increase in anti-semitic incidents manifest as acts of vandalism.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a nonprofit dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism, documented 1,986 such incidents across the USA past year. That's up from 199 such incidents in 2016.

Westbrook on Zaza Pachulia: 'He Tried to Hurt Me'
Westbrook also said he thought Pachulia was a dirty player, and Paul George wasn't willing to pardon him, either. He went for the rebound, but got tangled up with Nick Young and fell to the floor under the basket.

The Southern Poverty Law Center's report - "2017: The Year in Hate and Extremism" - said that within the white supremacist movement, neo-Nazi organizations saw the greatest growth, increasing from 99 in 2016 to 121 last year. The man had been rejected from the Israeli Army for mental health issues and his defense attorney said his client also suffered from brain tumor that may have impacted his behavior. It compiles the information from victims, law enforcement and community members.

"The current statistics confirm what we all thought past year: that anti-Semitism did surge", in N.J., said Joshua Cohen, regional director of the ADL's New Jersey office.

President Donald Trump was widely criticized for saying there was "blame on both sides" after violence erupted in August at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed when a man drove his auto into a crowd of demonstrators.

To Cohen, "anti-Semitism is like the canary in the coal mine".

"One thing I try to do is let people know that if it's happening to the Jews, these incidents, it's certainly happening, and is happening, to other groups as well", he said.

Greenblatt blamed the shift on "the divisive state of our national discourse" since the election of President Donald Trump. Jewish groups scolded the president past year for not mentioning Jews or antisemitism in a statement about the Holocaust. He did, however, mention Jewish people on the 2018 Holocaust Remembrance Day last month. It later emerged that Kadar, whom his mother described as autistic and suffering from a brain tumor, sold his bomb threat services on the dark web.

The increase in expressions of anti-Semitism among students is "astounding" in its size, Mr. Greenblatt said, but also not entirely surprising.

There were 1986 acts classified as anti-Semitic in 2017, up 57 percent from 2016 at 1,267 and more than double the 2,015 total of 941.
