Gun wasn't part of St. James High School threat, police say

Students, school administrators weigh options, outcomes for student protests

School will go on as scheduled Thursday at Parkway West High School with an increased police presence.

Also Wednesday, a 17-year-old South Mecklenburg High School student was arrested for bringing a gun to school in his vehicle. During the investigation, officials identified the suspect as 17-year-old Fernando Vasquez and located a firearm in his vehicle.

Rotorua Police said a student has been suspended from the school pending further investigation by the Ministry of Education. This morning, administration became aware that a student who drove his personal vehicle to school, was in possession of an airsoft gun located inside his vehicle.

NBC Charlotte is choosing to show Vasquez's booking photo and name because he's charged with a felony as an adult.

A 17-year-old girl at Desert Rose High School was taken into custody about 1:30 p.m., Lt. Roberto Morales said. A resource officer said that an object struck a victim in the back of the head in a classroom. She said the school or larger student body was not threatened but she said she could not provide any specific details on the nature of the threat.

Officers responded, established a perimeter around the school and had multiple officers patrolling the halls, according to police.

CMPD is investigating threats to two CMS schools that police believe were made by students.

Police say they received a report on Tuesday, Feb. 27 that a 14-year-old, ninth grade Proctor student had made threats to "shoot up the school".
