Zidane to rest Ronaldo to keep him fresh for PSG

All the football action from this weekend

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has described their 1-0 defeat at Espanyol on Tuesday as "painful" but "undeserved".

A much-changed Real team struggled to create chances and looked destined to play out a goalless draw with the Catalan side before Gerard Moreno scored a 93rd minute victor to hand the visitors their fifth league defeat of the season. With the disappointing result, Madrid are likely to find themselves in the fourth spot if Valencia win away at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.

And Real coach Zinedine Zidane was quick to blame the Catalan outfit's shock victor at the death on not having the rub of the green, despite his side being on a good run of form with five wins in a row.

They will look to get back to winning ways when they host Getafe this weekend, followed by a huge Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital next Tuesday.

Real had won five games in a row but rested Cristiano Ronaldo and were made to pay for a below-par performance. Casemiro was left out because of a stomach problem, while Dani Carvajal and Karim Benzema started on the bench.

The latest reports from Spain indicate Real are considering selling up to 10 players when the transfer window opens again.

The three candidates were shortlisted in December from a total of 2,042 design submissions from the public. The list was narrowed down to three by experts and voted for by school students across the nation.

Meanwhile, youngsters Borja Mayoral, Achraf Hakimi, Jesus Vallejo and Marcos Llorente have supposedly been deemed as not being up to scratch.

The Spanish worldwide appeared visibly annoyed at being replaced by Karim Benzema, and it is believed his captain berated his poor attitude after the match.

Espanyol, 13th in the league standings, had not won in seven matches, since they ended Barcelona's 29-match unbeaten streak in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals in January. Its last league win came eight rounds ago, at Levante. They had already beaten Atletico 1-0 at home and drawn Barcelona 1-1 in the league.

Gerard Moreno struck in the 94th minute at the RCDE Stadium as Real's rotated line-up felt the full punishment for a slack and disjointed display.

Following the game, Zidane spoke about his decision to send Ramos up front while saying his team didn't deserve to win or draw. We didn't manage to play at all or offer any sort of threat in the second half, although we didn't deserve to lose the game, ' Zidane said at a press conference. It's a defeat that hurts and it's a poor result.

Portu scored a 14th-minute victor to put Girona in seventh place, two points behind sixth-place Sevilla.
