WashPost: Mueller Probing Trump's Sessions Attacks for Obstruction

Wiki Media

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is feuding openly with President Donald Trump after the president called his conduct in the White House "disgraceful" on Twitter. Will take forever, has no prosecutorial power and already late with reports on Comey etc.

He added a slap at Michael Horowitz, the inspector general: "Isn't the IG an Obama guy?"

That source said Francisco, the No. 3 Justice Department official, had requested a get-together with Sessions and Rosenstein to talk about various aspects of his job. But this time Jeff Sessions, the nation's top lawman, is pushing back.

Trump's latest bone to pick with his attorney general is over FISA - Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act - abuse, something Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee alleged in their declassified memo happened when Trump associate Carter Page was surveilled by the US government.

On Thursday, after an unusually public series of potshots between Trump and Sessions, reporters repeatedly asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders whether the attorney general's job was safe. Trump has told associates that he has hired the best lawyers for his entire life, but is stuck with Sessions, who is not defending him and is not sufficiently loyal.

During that period previous year, President Trump ordered Reince Priebus, his chief of staff at the time, to obtain a resignation letter from Sessions, the Post reported.

Not only is Mr. Magoo a cartoon character invented in the 1940s and eons removed from national relevance, the accepted and preferred nickname for Sessions is the Keebler Elf.

U.S. supply builds send oil prices lower for second straight day
Rising shale output is working against the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' efforts to trim a global glut. Mega projects - like the Dakota Access conduit between North Dakota and IL - would cost $300 million more.

As my colleague Matt Yglesias pointed out, the seemingly innocuous meal was actually a public display of defiance: It "was a powerful symbol of both the attorney general's independence from Trump and the limits of that integrity".

Instead, Trump is turning to his tried-and-true Twitter technique of taunting Jeff Sessions. We now know the Trump-Russia investigation began because a former Trump campaign aide, George Papadopoulos, told Australia's ambassador to the United Kingdom that Russia had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of thousands of hacked emails. Horowitz also launched the review of the FBI's handling of the Clinton case - the stated reason by Trump and Sessions for the dismissal of Comey in May.

US Attorney-General Jeff Sessions speaks during a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington July 20, 2017.

Rosenstein has taken over all Russia-related matters because Sessions, having done work for Trump's presidential campaign, had recused himself. Some within Sessions's own department had criticized that silence as straining morale and making him seem too eager to appease the president at the risk of dangerously politicizing the institution.

"Question: If all of the Russian meddling took place during the Obama Administration, right up to January 20th, why aren't they the subject of the investigation?"

It was the second critical tweet in a week against Sessions, who reportedly submitted his resignation at least once previous year after Trump insulted him.

"Why aren't Dem [ocrat] crimes under investigation?" During the first six months of Trump's presidency, Trump asked for Sessions' resignation, called the attorney general an "idiot" but then later declined to accept his attorney general's resignation letter.
