Killer storm clears northeast U.S., leaving floods and outages

Skies were clear Sunday over much of the Northeast hit by the storm, which was blamed for nine deaths, including two children struck by trees.

"Minor flooding may continue in MA around high tide, though not as bad as Saturday, and there could still be some gusty winds over New England, but the storm is pretty much gone", said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Maryland.

By early Friday afternoon, 700,000 customers in Eastern states had lost electricity, the AP reports, with the highest numbers in Virginia, Pennsylvania and NY.

At one point, homes and buildings in the Boston area were completely under water.

"People in these homes need to plan for a prolonged outage", Kurt Schwartz, director of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, said Saturday.

Storm damage caused Amtrack services between Washington D.C. and Boston to be halted Friday.

By early Saturday morning, the region will be much drier, but the threat of winds and coastal flooding will remain into mid-day Saturday.

In Pennsylvania, a school bus was toppled over by high winds.

Top US negotiator to North Korea in surprise resignation
He said the North's nuclear and missile programs are self-defense measures against hostile USA policies toward Pyongyang. He has been a strong advocate for a diplomatic - rather than military - resolution to the North Korean nuclear crisis.

Floodwaters had receded in most areas, but the storm had taken huge chunks out of the coastline in MA and other states. Among the victims were two children: a 6-year-old boy in Virginia and an 11-year-old boy in NY state, both killed in their homes by fallen trees. Most accidents related to falling trees.

"We've been here a long time and we've never seen it as bad as this", Alex Barmashi, who lives in the hard-hit village of Sagamore Beach in MA, told the Associated Press.

Forecasters said rain and snow was expected to slowly come to an end early Saturday, hanging on across southern New England the longest. Later in the day, Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr.in NY said that an unidentified 11-year-old boy died when a tree fell onto his home and trapped him underneath.

The National Weather Service expected wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour (64 kph) in coastal areas Saturday, down from Friday's hurricane-force gusts.

Hundreds of residents had to be rescued in Quincy over the weekend by the Massachusetts National Guard and Quincy Police.

In Boston, many streets were closed and city officials advised people not to drive or walk in high water. By Friday afternoon, FlightAware reported there were thousands of flights cancelled across the country.

Service between NY and Washington along Amtrak's Northeast Corridor was suspended on Saturday morning because of power outages, the passenger railroad said on Twitter.

Along Boston's waterfront, roads and sidewalks were flooded Friday, closing several roads, reports The Associated Press.
