Lelio ascended the Dolby stage with Vega whom he called "the inspiration for this movie". After being investigated, it is uncovered she is a transgender woman and is shunned by Orlando's family, disregarded because of her gender identity.

Chile's "A Fantastic Woman", a drama about a transgender woman who battles her lover's family after he dies, won the Oscar on Sunday for best foreign language film. On Oscar nominations day in January, Lelio told me he and Vega were "remembering how two years ago we were shooting wondering if everything was going to even work".

Vega hopes the movie will represent the global transgender community.

Donald Trump jokes about his impeachment, mocks media
He then went on to mock several media organisations including "the failing New York Times " and CNN . On the exit of far too many of his aides in recent months, Trump joked: "I like turnover.

The magazine said she deserved "so much more than political praise", and was one of many publications heaping compliments on the actress. Perhaps most notably, in an instantly iconic scene, subtext becomes text in a sequence in which Marina struggles down a busy street as she is beset by a mighty wind, seemingly pushing her away from any sort of progress as she attempts to move forward.

He also said that her casting "brought something, a quality to the story that added a layer of complexity and beauty that I think, in this case, a cisgender actor would not have been capable of bringing". This is a wonderfully human story, and the warmth and respect with which Lelio treats Marina, and the ordinariness with which he depicts her life, is lovely. "This is my personal choice and this is what constitutes my humanity". It is a portrait of a real transgender woman, so it's undeniable that dimension of the film is crucial... But after a police auto picks her up and takes her back to the hospital, she realises that she's being treated as a suspect in Francesco's death and not as a grieving partner.

"She is fantastic because she finds dignity where there was none", says Vega.
