Netflix's wild documentary 'Icarus' exposes Russian doping scandal

Oscars 2018 Netflix's Icarus Wins Best Documentary

The Bryan Fogel-Dan Cogan film "Icarus", which helped expose Russia's widespread doping of its athletes, won the Oscar for Best Documentary on Sunday night.

Icarus basically focuses upon Fogel's investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs by Russian athletes to compete in the Olympic Games.

In his acceptance speech, Fogel said, "We dedicate this award to Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, our fearless whistleblower who now lives in great danger".

The Netflix documentary follows Fogel's curiosity into doping in sports, which uncovers the state-sponsored Russian doping program at the 2014 Winter Olympics and beyond by the man who oversaw its execution as the head of Moscow's anti-doping lab. The film's director initially wanted to see if he could get away with doping in a professional sport, but he ended up unearthing one of the biggest sports scandals ever. When Fogel befriended Russian doctor Grigory Rodchenkov, at that time in charge of testing the entire Russian Olympic team, the documentary took a wild turn. Fearing for his life, Rodchenkov fled to the US with Fogel's help and confessed on camera that he oversaw the swapping out of hundreds of athletes' urine samples during the Sochi games.

Warner, de Kock brawl shadows Australia's win
The statement from Cricket Australia read , "CA is aware of reports of an incident between players in Durban ". Warner's family, including his two children, are travelling with him on the South African tour.

"And here, after 12 or more years of chasing Lance Armstrong since 1999, with him being the "most tested athlete on planet earth", this guy had still never failed a drug test".

Given the film's real-life implications, and the daily news stories about Russian Federation possibly hacking the 2016 presidential election in favor of Donald Trump, "it's made it hard for me to enjoy the journey of this", Fogel says.

Icarus' Oscar win also marks a victory for Netflix.

Netflix reportedly paid $5 million to acquire the film.
