New Toyota Auris debuts at 2018 Geneva Motor Show

Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller

Japanese auto giant Toyota is to focus on more environmentally sustainable vehicles, led by self-charging hybrid electric cars, thereby becoming the first mainstream auto brand to take immediate action away from diesel, which includes all current and future generation passenger cars.

Toyota has done this once before with the C-HR that was launched in 2016.

Based on customer feedback the brand has chose to offer its core models with a choice of two hybrid electric powertrains.

In the UK, Toyota sold 101,692 units a year ago, of which hybrids made up 45,803 units - equating to 45%, similar to Europe.

In 2017, HEVs represented 41% of TME total sales, rising +38% year-on-year to 406,000 units.

Toyota will still offer diesel engines in commercial vehicles (Hilux, Proace and Land Cruiser) to meet customer needs.

Lin-Manuel Miranda also stars as the lamplighter Jack, an apprentice to Dick Van Dyke's Bert from the original film. Van Dyke will appear in the reboot as the retired chairman of the bank that's now run by Firth's character.

Toyota's third-generation Auris makes its world debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, sporting a more dynamic design and offering the option of a brand new hybrid powertrain.

To help owners further mark out that they have the latest version, Toyota has added a new selection of colours and several new alloy wheel designs.

Past year almost 15 percent of Toyota's sales in Europe were from diesel vehicles, down from 30 percent in 2012. Toyota Australia hasn't confirmed the outputs but says it offers "substantially more power and torque" than the current Corolla engine.

Starting with the new generation Auris, this expanded HEV line-up is a natural reaction to their passenger auto customers' demands, Toyota insist.

Toyota Europe CEO Johan van Zyl confirmed in Geneve today that the company will stop selling diesel-powered passenger cars in Europe by the end of this year. This isn't so much a bold move as it is a pragmatic one: if hybrids are on the rise (sales jumped 38 percent year-on-year) while diesel is nearly a rounding error, why keep diesel around?
