Volkswagen world premieres ID Vizzion concept vehicle

VW plans 2022 release for I.D. VIZZION autonomous luxe-EV

Nearly 70 per cent of the global population is expected to be living in urban areas by the year 2050, placing enormous strain on outdated infrastructure, the group's chief executive, Matthias Muller told media at the launch of the I.D Vizzion.

At the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen showcased an all-electric concept sedan - I.D. Vizzion - an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered auto that does not require the steering wheel.

Based on the company's All-New Electric Architecture, the I.D.

Speaking about its powertrain, Volkswagen I.D Vizzion gets a fully electric system that can churn out around 300 bhp of peak power, which comes from a powerful lithium-ion battery pack. The unit in front is a 75 kW coaxial drive, while the one in the rear is a compact 150 kW unit.

The Vizzion drives itself, leaving the occupants to travel in style. That would give the VW model an estimated range of around 413 miles on the European test cycle - the EPA test system typically about 25% less. Acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph is achieved in 6.3 seconds and top speed stands at 180 kmph. At 5163mm in length, 1947mm in width and 1506mm in height, it is 16mm shorter but 39mm wider and 56mm higher than the long wheelbase Phaeton, Volkswagen's long-running range-topping saloon that ceased production in 2016. There are four big captain seats and thick carpeting on the floor.

Boot space stands at 565 liters.

New Toyota Auris debuts at 2018 Geneva Motor Show
In the UK, Toyota sold 101,692 units a year ago , of which hybrids made up 45,803 units - equating to 45%, similar to Europe . Based on customer feedback the brand has chose to offer its core models with a choice of two hybrid electric powertrains.

Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand says: "The I.D. Vizzion shows what our brand is capable of in terms of technology, design and quality". The electric autonomous sedan gets large windows and glass roof which makes the cabin bright and airy. As a result, it doesn't have a dashboard, pedals, or a steering wheel. In the process, the lounge-like interior was redefined as well. The seats are upholstered in vegetable-tanned leather, while the cocoon like space is trimmed with natural, untreated wood.

Operating the I.D. VIZZION is through intuitive interactions between human and machine using augmented reality, mixed-reality eyewear (HoloLens), and voice control functionality.

The car's communications technology has advanced to make it a virtual assistant which is capable of learning and responds empathically.

Initially that will mean being able to distinguish between a cyclist and a vehicle, but later it will mean being able to learn its driver's preferred seat set-up and airconditioning settings as well as their favourite playlists. The company hopes to be selling 1 million electric vehicles through I.D. and its more mainstream line-up by 2025.

Volkswagen says it predicts that both Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous driving functions will be a reality by 2025, suggesting fully hands-off driving will arrive faster than now expected.
