Kyle Fuller likely to remain with Chicago Bears after all

Bears not expected to franchise tag CB Kyle Fuller

After having a solid comeback 2017 season, the Bears have made a decision to place the transition tag on cornerback Kyle Fuller, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Bears have come up with a more creative and less expensive way of keeping free-agent cornerback Kyle Fuller. For Fuller, that means a 2018 salary of $12.971 million instead of $14.975 million this season.

Under the transition tag, Fuller is free to negotiate with other teams, but the Bears have the right to match any offer he receives and keep him.

The Bears had a mostly forgettable 2017, going just 5-11 which included a quarterback change from Mike Glennon to Mitchell Trubisky.

Giants acquire Alec Ogletree from Rams
Besides dealing away Ogletree and Quinn, they were also involved in a third trade that brought Marcus Peters to Los Angeles. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Rams offered linebacker Alec Ogletree to the Chiefs as well.

Barring an offer from another team, Chicago have plenty of time to reach a long-term deal with Fuller, whom they drafted 14th overall in 2014.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Bears reportedly will place the transition tag on Fuller. However, in 2016-17, Fuller was forced to sit out the entire season after undergoing microscopic knee surgery. The tagging club is awarded no compensation if it chooses not to match. This isn't a surprise because it creates a hard situation to get a long-term deal done and, well, that's probably too rich for Fuller. He started 30 games in his first two seasons out of Virginia Tech and had six interceptions and 129 tackles.

Fuller is coming off a 2017-18 campaign in which he registered 68 total tackles, two interceptions and 22 pass defenses, the latter of which was good for second in the league.

Kyle Fuller of the Bears could become available if he doesn't re-sign with Chicago.
