Supreme Court transfers Karti Chidambaram's challenge to ED summons to HC

Karti was produced after the expiry of his three-day police remand before special judge Sunil Rana who posted the hearing on his bail plea on March 15.

Karti Chidambaram had moved the high court on Wednesday against a possible arrest by the ED in relation to the case.

Karti Chidambaram, arrested in the INX Media corruption case, told the special CBI court on Friday that he has been kept awake at night and allowed to sleep only 3-4 hours.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested him in Delhi on February 16.

The Central Bureau of Investigation would seek 6 more days custody of Karti Chidambaram, accused in the INX Media case.

The agency has alleged that Karti had received funds to the tune of Rs 10 lakh in the case.

Daylight Saving Time in OR : what you need to know
There have been numerous petitions and campaigns to end daylight-saving time or to extend it year-round. Florida US Senator Marco Rubio said Friday he would introduce a bill next week allowing the change.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, said Karti's custodial interrogation was necessary as "new incriminating materials" have been found against him.

Karti is facing the charges for using his stature and money to acquire Foreign Investment Promotional Board clearance for the INX Media firm in the year, 2007.

Defence lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi opposed the CBI plea, mocking at the agency for its failure to locate the well-known registered office address of Advantage Strategic in Nungambakkam High Road in Chennai. P Chidambaram was present during the proceedings, both in the high court and the trial court, while his wife Nalini, also a senior advocate, was there in the trial court.

Karti had approached the apex court seeking direction to declare that the Enforcement Directorate had no jurisdiction to conduct any investigation unrelated to the allegations in the FIR lodged by CBI on May 15, 2017.

During the day, the Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud asked the acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court to constitute a bench that will hear and deal with the prayer for interim relief on Friday. The counsel argued that the CBI is only harassing the accused by seeking further custody and does not have any new material to confront him with.

The FIPB unit of the finance ministry had not only granted illegal approval but also misinformed the investigation wing of the Income Tax Department, it had alleged.
