EagleVail's Shiffrin celebrates overall win with slalom victory in Germany

Shiffrin locks up overall title

In making Friday's podium behind Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel and Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg Shiffrin moved into an unassailable lead in the overall standings.

He clocked 1:49.17 to beat World Cup series leader Beat Feuz of Switzerland by 0.08 seconds.

Colorado's Mikaela Shiffrin won the overall World Cup title Friday - for the second year in a row.

Austrian legend Annemarie Moser-Proell won her 41st race at age 21, then took a whole season off to care for her father before he died of lung cancer in 1976.

Shiffrin, who is the Olympic champion in giant slalom, has yet to start her final run. Holdener finished second in slalom, followed by Sweden's Frida Hansdotter.

Also, getting her 11th win of the season was a personal best, though Schneider (14 in 1988-89) and American teammate Lindsey Vonn (12 in 2011-12) won more races in a single season.

Shiffrin formally won the discipline title as soon as the only remaining challenger, Petra Vlhova, failed to get the top-two result which the Slovakian skier needed in the penultimate event of the season.

"It was an incredible, incredible weekend for sure", said Shiffrin, who now heads to the World Cup Finals in Are, Sweden next week.

For Shiffrin, Saturday's slalom title is her fifth in six years - an unmatched run of dominance that includes a gold medal in the event at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Mikaela Shiffrin celebrates finishing first at the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup women's slalom on March 10, 2018 in Ofterschwang, Germany.

However, she failed to win a race after triumphing at a night slalom in Flachau, Austria, on January 9.

"For me the important thing is the balance between risk and being smart".
