Google Assistant Now Understands Custom Commands for Third-Party Products

From multilingual support and more languages to Routines, Google has been on a roll in recent weeks adding new features to Assistant.

Until recently, device makers big and small had to use the same Google Assistant regardless of whether they were making the Assistant work with phones, fridges or lights. This new feature enables the Google Assistant to understand particular voice commands.

Google has announced during SXSW 2018 its opening the Assistant up to third-parties so OEMs can build custom commands for different products.

Meanwhile, expanded notification features for Assistant Actions are now out of beta.

Today's new features are especially geared towards the smart home and better integrating those gadgets with Assistant.

Azlan Shah Cup: India salvage pride, finish fifth
Jamie Carr was in action first as he controlled his circle with an important boot to intercept a cross ball. The final was goalless until Govers scored from Australia's first penalty corner in the 38th minute.

Actions that are connected to Android apps also have new Assistant features en route. Basically, this means that Google Assistant users will have access to more audio experiences, including relaxing sound, clips from favorite TV shows, as well as news briefings. Voice commands can be used to pause or replay media, and a media player will appear on your phone. They will be able to turn off the display and still continue listening to the audio.

Amazon's Alexa may have more "skills" and connect with more services, but when it comes to artificial intelligence smarts, Google Assistant has the competition beat (sorry Siri, it isn't even close). TV shows like The Daily Show will have segments available for playback and general show information. There aren't many examples of hardware with built-in Assistant yet, but developers will be able to include custom commands in them going forward.

Google is also adding in updated payment options for developers to tie into, with Assistant able to recognise that you have a paid for subscription in say Google Play and tie that to a command given in Assistant.

Further, users will be able to subscribe to notifications from Actions. For example, you can tell Assistant you want a daily update on cryptocurrency prices from CoinBase. Esquire and Forbes are a few websites taking advantage of this new ability.
