United States warning over Mexican resort town draws mixed reaction

The United States embassy in Mexico City has closed its consular agency in Playa del Carmen and is barring employees from traveling there, following a ferry explosion back in February that injured 25 people including two Americans.

"US citizens must have as much information as possible to make informed travel decisions", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement Thursday.

The State Department first included the Riviera Maya, where Playa del Carmen is located, on its travel warning list in August previous year.

And last week, undetonated explosive devices were found on another boat owned by the same ferry company.

Originally the state department wanted people to think twice about going to Playa del Carmen, especially with spring break coming up.

Friday the state department said they've re-evaluated the situation and decided alerts were no longer needed for all of Playa del Carmen, outside the specific neighborhoods mentioned above.

U.S. officials have been in touch with Mexican law enforcement officials who are leading the investigation, Nauert said at a news briefing Thursday. Both incidents are still under investigation.

Florida governor expected to sign bill with new gun controls today
The measure would raise the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21 and create a waiting period on weapons sales. Marion Hammer, the NRA's Florida lobbyist, called the bill "a display of bullying and coercion".

The alert stopped short of prohibiting all USA travelers from traveling to the resort town.

After that, the U.S. Embassy barred employees from taking the ferries to Cozumel, one of the world's busiest cruise ship ports of call.

The State Department urged Americans to consider the alert and to exercise caution, should they choose to continue with their travel plans to the area.

The State Department has already advised travelers to avoid five states in Mexico due to crime. These states are Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas.

CBS News correspondent Anna Werner says the resort, in the heart of Mexico's Riviera Maya on the Yucatan peninsula, not far from other tourist hot spots like Cozumel, Cancun, and Tulum, may seem like a tropical paradise, but it has not been spared the violence sweeping other parts of the country.
