Fla. governor signs school-safety bill

Collier County School District said they plan to review the measure carefully to determine how to move forward.

After the bill signing, United Airlines captain Tony Montalto, whose daughter, Gina Rose, died in the school shooting, read a statement on behalf of the victims' families. "We have paid a bad price for this progress".

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been inundated by emails and phone calls from opponents and supporters of the measure, which does not include an assault-weapons ban.

The Florida House and Senate earlier this week voted to send the bill to the Republican governor for approval in wake of the deadly February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

It also argues the bill breaches the 14th amendment's equal protection clause by banning law-abiding citizens between 18-21 from buying guns. "We love tourists, new residents and the Second Amendment, " he said at the April NRA Annual Meeting in Atlanta. "This is just the beginning", Tyra Hemans said.

"I'm a concealed carry holder in multiple states, and the laws are different everywhere you go", he says. "You should be proud". It is not mandatory.

Boldrick had previously reached out to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement last month, and she said the Broward Sheriff's Office assigned a deputy to patrol her neighborhood.

"Will this bill make a huge investment and dramatically improve school safety, in the hopes of never seeing another tragedy like this again?"

The governor singled out two fathers whose children were killed, saying that they walked the halls of the Legislature since the shooting seeking change. "This is a time for all of us to come together, roll up our sleeves, and get it done", he said.

Florida health officials say a 15-year-old student recovering from five gunshots he suffered in the Florida school shooting has been transferred to intensive-care unit after his condition worsened. "It's a baby step, but a huge step at the same time".

The law's passage came as a surprise to many in Florida, where lawmakers had failed to enact legislation after the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016, which left 49 dead, and the shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport that killed five people previous year.

"At the end of the day, we'll be left with a really good gun-control, gun-reform bill in the state of Florida", Moskowitz said. It also claims that the law especially infringes on young womens' rights, as these "pose a relatively slight risk of perpetrating a school shooting [or] a violent crime of any kind".

It also raises the minimum age of purchasing a weapon from 18 to 21 and sets aside funding for school resource officers so that they can be better equipped if they are confronted with a shooting.

"[The NRA] wanted this bill to fail because they know that if we leave here with gun control, this will be a wind behind the sails of those kids as they march into Washington, D.C.", said Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Coral Springs, a graduate of Stoneman Douglas. Scott can't veto individual items in the bill itself, but can does have line-item veto power with the budget.

The Broward County school superintendent has already said he doesn't want to participate in the guardian program.

Nikolas Cruz, wearing an orange jumpsuit and looking down, made his first court appearance on 17 charges of first-degree attempted murder Friday.
