United Nations investigators on Myanmar put Facebook in crosshairs

Rohingya Muslims carry their children and belongings after crossing the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh

The Rohingya people from Rakhine, Myanmar are among the most persecuted minorities and regarded as the largest stateless nation in the world.

"What we are seeing in Rakhine State is a land grab by the military on a dramatic scale", Tirana Hassan, Amnesty's crisis response director, said in a statement.

In a new report, the worldwide human rights group claims, with the help of satellite images and witness accounts, Myanmar's military has been bulldozing the remains of torched villages to make way for new infrastructure in the Rakhine state, where the majority of the estimated 1 million Rohingya in Myanmar used to reside.

The report uses satellite images that reveal the rapid increase in military infrastructure being built on top of flattened villages. At least three new such facilities are reportedly under construction.

Lee said she hoped to make official visits to India and China as part of her preparation to report to the General Assembly later this year, and said she remained hopeful that the Myanmar government would revisit its decision and grant her access. They are building centers to house same security forces that have committed crimes against humanity against Rohingya, "says Hassan of AI".

"S$3 ome people have posted [online] that the military is building army bases, helipads, and roads in villages that have been burned and bulldozed", he said.

Bihar bypolls: Voting underway for Araria Lok Sabha, 2 assembly seats
Bihar Congress chief Kaukab Quadri claimed that 137 EVMs had faced "technical glitches" and harmed the flow of voting. However, a total of 14 candidates including three women are in the fray.

The uncertain situation in Rakhine furr hinders repatriation plans of Rohingya fled since August that Bangladésh and Myanmar agreed last November, and that in principle y should have started in January of this year. However, the Myanmar government had defended its move by stating that they were simply trying to rebuild the region. The aerial photographs of the entire operation being conducted in Myanmar are doing the rounds and were made public on February 9 when Kristian Schmidt, European Union's ambassador to Myanmar had shared the images taken from an aircraft.

Nearly six months after launching the military operation, Myanmar's military has admitted to only killing 10 captured Rohingya men, who, it claims, were "terrorists".

Satellite imagery also shows how new refugee reception centres - meant to "welcome" Rohingya who return from Bangladesh - are surrounded by security fences and close to areas with a heavy presence of military and border guard personnel.

Monday's findings follow a report published by Human Right Watch last month, which found that the military was bulldozing Rohingya villages that were either burnt down or abandoned last summer.

It is estimated that total number of refugees in Cox's Bazar, Bangladeshi district adjoining Myanmar to which y arrive, is around million, if y add up to about 300,000 who already lived re due to previous waves of violence.
