ICE Spokesman Resigns Over Trump Administration's 'Misleading' Statements on Raid

San Diego area ICE arrests of noncriminal immigrants led nation from October to December

Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan blamed the Oakland mayor, saying "some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision".

Schwab said that, before resigning, as he was faced with questions from reporters about Homan's and Sessions' comments, he hoped he could set the record straight and correct the idea that hundreds of risky criminals got away thanks to Schaaf.

"I quit because I didn't want to perpetuate misleading facts", he told the San Francisco Chronicle.

"The more people I have in the jail the less people I have to send out on the street to look for them", the official said, speaking on condition he not be named as part of a background briefing set up by the White House ahead of President Trump's trip to California Tuesday. "They asked me to deflect, and I didn't agree with that".

In response, Schaaf said, "How dare you vilify members of our community by trying to frighten the American public into thinking that all undocumented residents are unsafe criminals?". "Californians will continue to proudly keep our doors open to the immigrants who make America more American".

He also stated that though he pushed back on those statements and wanted the agency to correct the "800" number frequently used in reference to the amount of "criminal aliens" who escaped the raid, ICE told him to "deflect" questions from the media. According to ICE, of the 232 people picked up, 115 had felonies or misdemeanors. "But to blame her for 800 risky people out there is just false", Schwab added.

Then, last week, Sessions gave a speech in Sacramento.

"So here's my message to Mayor Schaaf: How dare you".

And just last week, in Sacramento, Sessions said, "Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue with more difficulty in more risky situations, all because of one mayor's irresponsible action".

Netflix pays its queen less than her consort on 'The Crown'
Claire Foy , who played the monarch in the first two seasons of The Crown , was not paid equally to her co-star Matt Smith . The Crown is one of the most expensive television shows ever produced, costing a reported $130 million for the first season.

Mrs. Pelosi and other anti-Trump politicians have urged ICE to focus on illegal immigrants with what they deem serious crimes on their records, and forgo deporting most illegal immigrants.

In actuality, Schwab said, the raid was more successful than ICE planned.

President Donald Trump didn't stay behind in fabricating the figures as he said "close to 1,000" would have gotten arrested if the mayor hadn't issued her warning. Although he agrees that Schaaf's actions were "misguided" and "not responsible", he takes issue with placing her with the blame of 800 unsafe people remaining at large.

Their claims were questioned by critics - and now by Schwab, a veteran public affairs officer who had worked at the Defense Department and NASA. "I've never been in a situation when I've been asked to ignore the facts because it was more convenient".

As the days went by, he told CNN, "I just couldn't bear the burden - continuing on as a representative of the agency and charged with upholding integrity, knowing that information was false". But Lori Haley, the western region communications director for ICE on Monday, told KTVU that Schwab had resigned "abruptly".

ICE spokesperson Liz Johnson issued the following statement regarding Schwab's resignation.

Schwab, however, said that both the number of potential arrests and the blame heaped on Schaaf by officials was wrong.

She said this of Schwab: "We appreciate his service and wish him well".

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department initially denied that the attorney general had spoken of "800 wanted criminals" in his speech. "And to say they're a type of unsafe criminal is also misleading". Very risky. She really made law enforcement much more unsafe than it had to be. "We believe in the rule of law and one criminal alien victimizing residents of Oakland is one too many". "Our democracy depends on public servants who act with integrity and hold transparency in the highest regard".
