Netflix pays its queen less than her consort on 'The Crown'

Outrage The Crown's Claire Foy earned less than her male co-star Matt Smith it has been revealed

Claire Foy, who played the monarch in the first two seasons of The Crown, was not paid equally to her co-star Matt Smith.

While acknowledging that there was a discrepancy, the producers haven't disclosed how much more Smith was paid than Foy. Mackie added, "Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen".

Claire Foy and Matt Smith signed on for two seasons of the Netflix series The Crown, but then aged out, so to speak.

Matt Smith's portrayal of a young Duke of Edinburgh earned him more than Foy's Golden Globe-winning performance as Queen Elizabeth in the Netflix drama.

She's not known for histrionics, but Queen Elizabeth II would surely struggle to maintain her famous poise if she knew the actress playing her on The Crown earned less than the man portraying her husband.

Drew Brees is now officially available
However a risky situation could be evolving if the Vikings make an offer that blows the Saints' stance out the water. New Orleans Saints right tackle Zach Strief announced his retirement on Monday after 12 seasons with the franchise.

While Smith's salary wasn't stated outright, Foy was paid $40,000 per episode, according to a breakdown of TV stars' pay.

The Crown is one of the most expensive television shows ever produced, costing a reported $130 million for the first season. Arguably, however, the fact that she was the show's lead, playing the Queen, throws some heft behind the opinion that she deserved more.

Before tackling The Crown, Smith played the 11th iteration of the title character on BBC's Doctor Who.

Mackie said that going forward, all actresses to tackle the royal role will take home a fatter paycheck, though it's too late for Foy, who has been recast, along with the rest of her co-stars, going into Season 3. Olivia Colman will play the queen when the series resumes filming in July, while the new Philip has yet to be announced.

In response, the series' producers, Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries, acknowledged the 35-year-old male English actor was paid more owing to his Doctor Who fame, but said the practice would be rectified in the future, according to U.S. entertainment magazine Variety.
