Trump sacks Tillerson as secretary of state

CIA Director Mike Pompeo listens while testifying on Capitol Hill in Washington

A top State Department official says President Donald Trump never explained to ousted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson the reason why he was sacked. In October, NBC reported that Tillerson called the president a "moron" following a meeting in July.

"I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service".

A report by the Washington Post said that Tillerson was asked on Friday to step down from his post, which he assumed just over a year ago.

Tillerson is also deeply unpopular within the State Department for his imperious management style and disregard for the traditions of diplomacy, which has led to a steady level of attrition throughout his tenure.

Goldstein said, "We wish Secretary Pompeo well".

US President Donald Trump has sacked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, replacing him with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.

Gina Haspel, the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will be nominated to replace Director Pompeo and she will be the CIA's first-ever female director, a historic milestone.

A White House official said Trump wanted to have a new team in place ahead of upcoming talks with North Korea and various trade talks.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly. She will be the agency's first female director in history.

Trump reportedly made the decision last week, summoning Tillerson home from a trip to Africa.
