UN Finds Facebook Partly to Blame for Fueling Myanmar Genocide

UN Finds Facebook Partly to Blame for Fueling Myanmar Genocide

"Hate speech is certainly, of course, a part of that", he added.

"This casts further doubt on the sincerity of Myanmar regarding repatriating the Rohingya from Bangladesh", she said.

Facebook has said there is "no place for hate speech" on its platform.

"We are not denying rights violations but we are asking for strong, fact-based, and trustworthy evidence on the allegations they are making", Myanmar government spokesman Zaw Htay told the AP.

His remarks come a day after United Nations special rapporteur to Myanmar Yanghee Lee warned the violence against the Rohingya bears "the hallmarks of genocide".

About 700,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since Myanmar's military launched an operation in August against "insurgents" in Rakhine state.

The body said that social media had played a "determining role" in Myanmar by serving hate speech, reportedReuters.

"Everything is done through Facebook in Myanmar", she told reporters, adding that Facebook had helped the impoverished country but had also been used to spread hate speech.

Trump sacks Tillerson as secretary of state
US President Donald Trump has sacked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, replacing him with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

"All the information I have received indicates that the intent of the perpetrators was to cleanse northern Rakhine state of their existence, possibly even to destroy the Rohingya as such, which, if proven, would constitute the crime of genocide", he said.

The UN's Fact-finding Mission on Myanmar announced the interim findings of its investigation on Monday.

Delivering her report to thecCouncil in Geneva, Lee said that to date accountability for the crimes committed in Rakhine state following 25 August 2017, and 9 October 2016, was elusive, adding that this must now be the focus of the worldwide community's efforts to bring long-lasting peace, stability and democratisation to Myanmar.

Wirathu, a prominent face of Myanmar's Buddhist ultra-nationalist movement, had amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on the network, using it as a platform to attack Muslims, singling out the stateless Rohingya minority.

The special rapporteur said she hoped to make official visits to India and China as part of her preparation to report to the General Assembly later this year, and said she remained hopeful the Myanmar government would revisit its decision and grant her access.

"This must be aimed at the individuals who gave the orders and carried out violations against individuals and entire ethnic and religious groups", said Lee.

While Lee expressed hope that de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi would eventually put a stop to the campaign of violence, she also said the government leadership who did not intervene must also be held accountable.

Though Facebook has yet to comment on UN's recent statement, the social media giant has previously admitted that it faces difficulty in tackling hate speech.
