'Compression to the neck': United Kingdom launches murder probe into Russian exile's death

"A murder investigation has been launched following the results of a postmortem into the death of 68-year-old Russian businessman Nikolay Glushkov", London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Although police are careful to say Gluskov's murder can't be linked to the latest poisoning - it can be linked to Moscow, and that's all the more frightening.

Mr Glushkov was found dead at his home in New Malden, southwest London, on Monday evening.

Britain granted Berezovsky political asylum three years later on the grounds that his life would be in danger if he went back home.

The Guardian reports that the Met's counter-terrorism command is retaining its lead role in the investigation "because of the associations Mr Glushkov is believed to have had". His death is now one of a number being re-examined by the British authorities.

Mr Glushkov was also close to Mr Berezovsky, who was found dead in his former wife's Berkshire home in 2013.

Police said a post-mortem showed no sign of a violent struggle, and an inquest recorded an open verdict after hearing conflicting evidence.

Police said there was no link at this stage to the attempted murders of Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia.

The i says Mrs May will target Russians with a "wave" of sanction that could see oligarchs' United Kingdom assets frozen.

Police and MI5 are expected to examine allegations that a series of deaths on United Kingdom soil, including the Berezovsky case, may be linked to Russian Federation.

Last year, he was sentenced to eight years imprisonment and a 1 million ruble fine in absentia for allegedly defrauding Aeroflot - a case that continued at the time of his death.

Glushkov was reportedly due to appear in court in London on the morning of his death but failed to appear.

His LinkedIn page listed him as a "private consultant" in financial services since 2011. Police ruled his death a suicide.

A Russian exile in London has told Sky News he has been spoken to by police about his own safety in the wake of Mr Glushkov's death.

There are no wider public health concerns in relation to this investigation.
