DeAndre Harris Not Guilty on Assault Charge

Deandre Harris found not guilty

A Virginia judge has acquitted a black man who was brought up on an assault charge after being badly beaten during the violent aftermath last year's white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.

Photos and video from that day showed Harris being beaten by a group of white supremacists who had taken part in the Charlottesville rally.

Harris suffered a concussion, a knee injury and a head laceration, among other injuries, during the assault.

"I got eight staples in my head, I got a cut [above my eyebrow], a busted lip, I broke my wrist, a chipped tooth", he said. "I didn't see that he did anything wrong that day at all".

In response, several white supremacists chased Harris into a parking garage and attacked him, for which four of them are facing charges.

Charlottesville General District Court Judge Robert Downer Jr. determined that Harris intervened only to help his friend and did not intend to hit Crews, per the Post.

Google Maps Will Now Help You Navigate Wheelchair Accessible Routes
Google Maps is aiming to mitigate this problem with its latest addition to Maps - wheelchair accessible navigation. Simply open Maps , type in a "Location", look at "Directions" and then hit the "Transportation" icon.

Harris said he swung a flashlight towards Crews because he believed Crews was attacking a friend with a flagpole.

During the protest, a white nationalist rammed his vehicle into a crowd of counter-protesters killing one person and injuring 19 others.

Hundreds of white nationalists had gathered at the Charlottesville rally, which was originally organized to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee.

But Mr. Harris testified in court that he saw only what happened after that - Mr. Crews "driving the flag into somebody's torso" - and that he "thought it was being used as a weapon". The protesters clashed with counter-protesters and Charlottesville police reportedly did not ensure separation between the two groups.

DeAndre Harris (on the ground) was brutally assaulted in a parking garage in Charlottesville last summer. He was "defenseless against a mob of angry Alt-Right demonstrators" who mauled him with flagsticks, shields and pieces of wood, the report said.
