Black Panther Spends A Fifth Week Atop The US Box Office

Black Panther box office

With the Disney duo "Black Panther" and "A Wrinkle in Time" still performing well in theaters, it's not an easy weekend to be a new release, and it's not going to get any easier next weekend.

Black Panther remained atop the box office for a fifth week in a row, a feat that no movie has pulled off since Avatar opened in 2009.

Continuing to make history five weeks after its debut is Marvel's "Black Panther", bringing in an estimated $27 million and holding on tight to the top spot.

Despite an average debut in the U.S., Alicia Vikander's "Tomb Raider" made more than $100 million in foreign ticket sales, pushing its worldwide box-office total to $126 million. By next weekend, Panther will claw its way past Marvel's The Avengers to move into fifth place. It added $16.6 million to its total (cume now $61.1 million). By the end of its run, it could possibly surpass Jurassic World and Titanic to move into third (all pre-inflation, of course). At 31 days, it's the second-fastest film to gross $600 million domestically, sitting only behind "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

Reviews were largely negative for the new Tomb Raider, with critics giving the reboot a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 46/100 on Metacritic.

Gender pay gap in Germany unchanged 21 percent
Women make up more than half of HSBC's United Kingdom workforce (54%) yet less than a quarter of its senior roles (23%). Secondly, HSBC's analysis shows a further gender imbalance in junior roles, which tends to attract lower pay.

Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, and Michael B. Jordan also star in Black Panther, which was directed by Ryan Coogler based on a script he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole. Though it has grossed $96 million in two weeks of release in China, Black Panther slid steeply in its second weekend.

According to ComScore, overall box office is up 2.2 percent year-to-date.

Black Panther and Tomb Raider will next go up against the Pacific Rim sequel which is tracking in the low $20M range.

Rounding out the top tier are Game Night at No. 6 with $5.6 million, Peter Rabbit at No. 7 with $5.2 million, Strangers: Prey at Night at No. 8 with $4.8 million, Red Sparrow at No. 9 with $4.5 million and Death Wish at No. 10 with $3.4 million.

Paramount's fourth weekend of Annihilation and Sony's 13th weekend of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle tied for 11th place with $1.7 million.
