From Russian spy poisoning to diplomatic tensions

Prime Minister Theresa May rallies party with warning to Russia

Russian Federation has announced the expulsion of 23 British diplomats as a row escalates with London over a nerve-agent attack on a former double agent, Sergei Skripal and his daughter on British soil.

"Non-pleasing persons are declared and 23 diplomats from Embassy of United Kingdom in Moscow are expelled within one week", a statement from Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out on eve of a presidential election that will predictably give Vladimir Putin His fourth term in Kremlin.

British Prime Minister Theresa May this week expelled 23 Russian diplomats and severed high-level contacts over the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

Britain blames Russian Federation for the nerve-agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter, who were found unconscious in the British city of Salisbury on March 4 and remain in critical condition. After several days of investigation, British authorities determined that they were poisoned with a nerve agent known as Novichok, which is believed to be unique to Russian Federation.

Britain's foreign secretary accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of personally ordering the poisoning of the Skripals.

Russian Federation has threatened to escalate its response should Britain respond with further sanctions, according to the ministry statement.

"The British side is warned that in case of further unfriendly actions against Russia, the Russian side reserves the right to take further retaliatory measures", according to the statement.

"We will always do what is necessary to defend ourselves, our allies and our values against an attack of this sort, which is an attack not only on the United Kingdom, but upon the worldwide rules-based system on which all countries, including Russian Federation, depend for their safety and security", Bristow told reporters.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry cast Russian Federation as the aggrieved party.

United Kingdom diplomats expelled from Russian Federation
The representatives of Russia's Foreign Ministry added that the British Council is not anymore functioning in Russian Federation . It also says it has begun a separate probe into the suspected murder of a Russian living in London , Nikolai Glushkov .

The response comes amid a deterioration of London-Moscow relations over the consequent British punitive measures against Russia and the former Russian spy attack row.

The source of the nerve agent - which Britain says is Soviet-made Novichok - is unclear, as is the way it was administered.

Britain, the United States, Germany and France have jointly called on Russia to explain the attack, while US President Donald Trump has said it looks as if the Russians were behind it.

On March 15 Britain, France, Germany and the USA say in a rare joint declaration that "there is no plausible alternative explanation" to Russian involvement and call on Moscow to provide "full and complete disclosure" of the Soviet-era chemical programme that developed Novichok.

"It is possible that (Britain) will continue to respond; we are ready for this".

The 29-member North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance expresses solidarity with Britain over what it calls the first offensive use of a nerve agent on the military alliance's territory since World War II. The Skripals remain in critical condition.

Top EU diplomats were expected to discuss next steps at a meeting Monday, with some calling for a boycott of the upcoming World Cup in Russian Federation. Putin's spokesman denounced the claim.

British Prime Minister Theresa May this week ordered 23 Russian diplomats expelled as part of measures to punish Russia over the March 4 poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the city of Salisbury.
