Uber self-driving vehicle hits, kills pedestrian

Uber self-driving car kills Arizona woman

Uber is one of several companies testing semi-autonomous vehicles on the roads of Arizona, and the company said it came to the state specifically because of lax rules on the technology created by Governor Doug Ducey.

The woman - who is yet to be named - died of her injuries in hospital. The vehicle was in autonomous mode at the time of the collision, with a vehicle operator behind the wheel, police told Fortune.

Tempe, Arizona police are investigating a deadly crash involving a self-driving Uber vehicle early Monday morning.

Uber is temporarily halting self-driving auto tests in all locations after a deadly accident.

They released the following statement: "Our hearts go out to the victim's family". The agency says it will examine vehicle factors, human performance and electronic recorders.

At the time, Arizona-based ABC 15 TV reported that a auto failed to stop before hitting and rolling the self-driving Volvo SUV.

Kremlin promises retaliation against United Kingdom over diplomat expulsions after ex-spy's poisoning
Sergei Lavrov told Russian media the expulsions would "definitely" happen. Moscow has vehemently denied responsibility for the poisoning incident.

So-called robot cars, when fully developed by companies including Uber, Alphabet Inc and General Motors Co, are expected to drastically cut down on motor vehicle fatalities and create billion-dollar businesses.

Uber is assisting police with the investigation. The ride-hailing giant has suspended testing on driverless cars in Arizona, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto, according to the New York Times.

Nonetheless, at least one prominent researcher is calling for the breakneck race to get self-driving cars on the road to come to a halt.

The company is devising a technology that will let its cars "talk" with pedestrians, in hopes of making such accidents less likely. Arizona has become a hub for autonomous driving research and development with its more lax regulations about testing.

A previous incident with a Tesla using its Autopilot system (technically not a self-driving system) resulted in the death of the driver in a 2016 crash.
