Microsoft Executive Myerson to Leave Amid Corporate Restructuring

Microsoft MSFT announced a major reorganization Thursday, establishing two main divisions focused on experiences and devices and cloud and AI platforms.

Photo Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft's Windows and devices group, will be departing as part of the reorganization. A couple of units that are now part of Microsoft's AI + Research group are going to be moving into Guthrie's new organization.

In a move that will help Elon Musk sleep a little better at night, Nadella is also creating an AI ethics unit headed up by Shum and Microsoft president and top lawyer Brad Smith.

The executive won't be leaving immediately, however, as he will stick around to assist with the transition "over the coming months".

Surface Chief Panos Panay will now serve as Chief Product Officer to "further [Microsoft's] product ethos across hardware and software boundaries for our first-party devices".

A new team, dubbed AI Perception & Mixed Reality, to be led by Alex Kipman, a Microsoft Technical Fellow and the inventor of the Kinect and HoloLens devices. "Terry has been instrumental in helping me arrive at this new organizational structure", said Nadella. The RS5 would be the last Redstone release as the software giant will release new versions of Windows 10 with a name referring to the release date.

Things people use: Microsoft's new "experiences and devices" team will attempt to unify the way the firm is developing products for consumer and business users.

Joe Belfiore, who was once the chief promoter of Windows 10 Mobile, will be responsible for pushing Windows experiences with the PC and device ecosystem.

"The objective of the Experiences & Devices team is to instill a unifying product ethos across our end-user experiences and devices", Nadella wrote. In November 2017, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 was on 600 million active monthly devices-up from 500 million in May 2017, as reported by our sister site ZDNet. Putting those teams, which face fierce competition from the likes of Amazon (amzn), Google (googl), and Apple (aapl), together with Azure could help them catch on as cloud services.

Another new team called AI Cognitive Services & Platform to be led by Eric Boyd. Certain parts of Microsoft's AI + Research group are also moving to Guthrie's organization.

The cloud unit under Guthrie is also gaining some of the company's artificial intelligence work most closely tied to corporate customers.

Nadella told employees he would be releasing more plans around the re-org next week in a special company Q&A session.

What this ultimately means for Microsoft and Windows remains to be seen.

"We'll talk more about these changes at the Q&A next week and the important work ahead", Nadella said.
