Police officer fired and another suspended after deadly shooting

Blane Salamoni, who was sacked, was one of two officers who struggled with Sterling July 5, 2016, firing six shots that proved fatal and sparked a series of protests throughout the Baton Rouge area.

The second officer involved in the confrontation, Howie Lake, was suspended for three days for violating the command of temper standard.

Salamoni was sacked for violating the use-of-force policies in the 2016 shooting death of Alton Sterling.

Attorneys for Alton Sterling's children described a mix of reactions - appreciation, disappointment, sadness, anger and "a call for help" - in response to Friday's (March 30) release of graphic body-cam footage of Sterling's death, along with the Baton Rouge Police Department's decision to fire the officer who killed Sterling and suspend the other officer involved.

Lawyers for the two officers are nearly certain in the appeals process to seize on the mayor's statements calling for the discipline of the officers, and argue that the punishments were a foregone conclusion, said Henry D.H. Olinde, a Baton Rouge lawyer with significant experience with civil service cases.

Lake found a loaded.38 caliber handgun in Sterling's right front pocket after the shooting, Landry's office said. Sterling seems confused at times, asking, "What I did, sir?" and, seconds later, telling the officers they were hurting his arm.

The department had originally said Salamoni's body camera fell off during the shooting and did not capture the shooting.

Alton Sterling, who was shot dead by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S. on July 5, 2016, is seen in an undated photo posted on his Facebook account. "The person who was out of control was Blane Salamoni", Adams said.

For almost two years, Sterling's family and many other Baton Rouge residents have called on authorities to release all of the video footage of the shooting.

The state's top prosecutor said Tuesday that the two cops, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II, who are both white, would not be charged in the July 2016 killing of Sterling-who is black-outside a convenience store.

Earlier this week Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced that no state criminal charges would be filed against the officers - and that the case would not go before a grand jury. "Policing isn't easy", Paul said. In one video, an officer draws something from his waistband and points it at Sterling.

The Justice Department also said that evidence couldn't prove or disprove Salamoni's assertion that Sterling was reaching for a gun.

Both officers learned their fate following separate disciplinary hearings held Thursday evening.

"Considering this, it is reasonable that Mr. The community and law-enforcement have to learn to get along", said Stewart. "Sterling was under the influence and that contributed to his noncompliance".

Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul addressed Sterling's loved ones in a statement announcing the decision.

An autopsy indicated Sterling had cocaine, methamphetamine, hydrocodone, a marijuana ingredient, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol in his blood.

An internal police investigation into Sterling's actions determined the officers' actions "were not minor deviations from policy", Paul said Friday.
